A libákat legeltető lány hatalmas tőrpárbajnak lesz szemtanúja. Már ez az első jelenet sokat megmutatott a később nagy rendezővé érő Ridley Scott sokoldalú tehetségéből. A két huszártiszt éveken át tartó vetélkedéséről és állandó, ádáz csatájáról szóló film történetében ugyan vannak kivetnivalók, a párbajjelenetek miatt mégis kivételesen emlékezetes marad ez a kosztümös, a napóleoni háborúk idején játszódó film. Méltó párjává vált olyan nagy klasszikus, kardos-köpönyeges mozgóképeknek, mint A púpos vagy A fekete tulipán. A párbajjelenetek vágása, felépítése, koreográfiája az, ami miatt, akik egykor láthatták ezt a filmet, azt gondolhatták: alkotójáról még sokat fognak hallani. Igazuk lett.

The girl looking after geese is witness to a titanic duel. From the first scene, we can see much of the hugely diverse talents of Ridley Scott who went on to become a great director. Although there are faults in the plotting of the film, which is about the rivalry and constant, ferocious battle between two hussar officers lasting years, still the duelling scenes make this costume drama set during the Napoleonic Wars highly memorable. In fact, it has become a worthy fellow of such classic swashbuckling movies as Le Bossu and The Black Tulip. The cutting, structuring and choreography of the duelling scenes are the reason that those watching this film at the time knew they would hear much more about this director. And they were right.
